Casco Viejo (Old Quarter) was founded in 1673 after the original Panama City was destroyed by pirates. Today it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most fascinating neighborhoods in the Americas—where beautifully restored colonial buildings stand next to crumbling ruins, boutique hotels neighbor local markets, and rooftop bars offer views of the modern skyline across the bay.

What You'll Experience

• Colonial Architecture: Walk cobblestone streets lined with Spanish colonial churches, plazas, and mansions. Our guide explains the history and ongoing restoration efforts.
• Plaza de la Independencia: Where Panama declared independence from Colombia in 1903. The beautiful Metropolitan Cathedral dominates the square.
• Ruins of Santo Domingo: The famous Flat Arch (Arco Chato) that helped convince engineers the region was stable enough for the Canal.
• Presidential Palace: See the "Palace of the Herons" (named for the herons that live in the courtyard) from the plaza.
