Embera Village

About This Experience

The Embera are one of Panama's seven indigenous groups, traditionally living along the rivers of the Darién jungle. This tour takes you deep into Chagres National Park by dugout canoe to visit an authentic Embera village, where you'll experience their traditional way of life, music, dance, and crafts.

What You'll Experience

• Dugout Canoe Journey: Travel up the Chagres River in a traditional carved canoe, surrounded by pristine rainforest. Keep your eyes open for toucans, monkeys, and caimans.
• Village Welcome: The Embera welcome visitors with traditional music and dance. You may be invited to join!
• Cultural Demonstration: Learn about Embera history, traditions, medicinal plants, and their relationship with the rainforest.
• Traditional Lunch: Enjoy tilapia or chicken cooked in plantain leaves with patacones and jungle fruits.
• Handicrafts: The Embera are renowned for their intricate woven baskets and tagua nut carvings. Purchase directly from the artisans.
• Optional Body Paint: Try jagua—a natural temporary tattoo used by the Embera for ceremonies.

Schedule

• 7:30 AM – Hotel pickup
• 9:00 AM – Arrive at Chagres River, board canoe
• 10:00 AM – Arrive at Embera village
• 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM – Cultural activities and lunch
• 1:30 PM – Canoe back to river landing
• 2:30 PM – Return to Panama City
